Technology is constantly improving and advancing in ways that can make our lives better and more convenient. There was once a time when smart devices were created and used only in the homes of the wealthy. Today anyone can access this smart technology to improve the quality of their life, give them peace of mind, protect their home, watch their dog, and so much more. You do not have to own your home to partake in these fantastic pieces of technology either! Here are some of our favorite smart devices to use in an apartment.

Home Assistants

Just about every company now makes a smart home assistant, so it really comes down to which product and company is your preference. The most popular home assistant right now is Amazon’s Echo or Alexa products, but other versions offered include Google Home, and the Microsoft Cortana/Harman Kardon Invoke. Apple has finally come out with their version of the home assistant which they are calling HomePod. However, it is the most expensive version on the market costing about $350. Home assistants can be a lot of fun and offer helpful features such as setting reminders, controlling the thermostat, playing music or podcasts, completing internet searches and more. They are a great option for making your apartment a “smart home” since there is no installation needed.

Security Camera

There is no longer a need to purchase a large security system that requires installation and monthly payments. Aside from the hassle and expense that come with these systems many would not be available to the average apartment dweller. A standalone security camera now gives individuals and families in apartments peace of mind by allowing them to check in on their home at any time via their phone. There are endless options available that can get extremely advanced, such as having facial recognition, to very simplistic depending on your needs. If you are interested in saving a lot of the video footage recorded, most cameras have the option of purchasing cloud storage for a monthly fee.

Smart Plugs

These are very simple upgrades any renter can feel safe using, knowing that it will not affect the apartment in a negative way that could upset your landlord. Smart plugs are simple home technology that allows you to control the wall sockets with just your phone wherever you are. You will be able to schedule and monitor power usage, as well as use your phone like a remote control. They are generally inexpensive running from about $25.00 to $70.00 depending on how extravagant you would like to get.

Smart Light Bulbs

These bulbs are so simple that all you have to do is screw them in like a regular bulb and have a WiFi connection! You are able to sync them with your home assistant so that they respond to voice commands. Be sure to look into which type of bulb you would like to purchase beforehand because they vary in how they are controlled. Some require the use of a hub that plugs in with an Ethernet cord while others are only controlled by a mobile app. You will need to decide in advance which is the best option and price for your apartment.

There are several other ways apartment dwellers can easily upgrade their home to be more tech-friendly but as a precaution, each renter should always go over their lease and renter’s agreement. Some items that could be available to you are smart thermostats or smart locks. While these items may be fairly simple for the user to install, they may violate the terms of your lease and could even disrupt some behind the scenes wiring in the building. Read over your lease to be sure what are and are not allowed to install and then get to work smartening up your home!
