Philadelphia has been awaiting the arrival of warm and sunny weather for a while. Now that we have reached the month of June, many of us are looking for any reason at all to celebrate. Whether that happens inside our apartments or outside when we can catch a moment of sunshine and warm weather makes no difference! So if you are interested in some silly and fun holidays to get you in the mood for the summer months check out some of our favorites on the list below!
June 1st – National Doughnut (Donut) Day
The first Friday of every June we celebrate this delicious holiday which was created by the Salvation Army in 1938. The holiday was created to commemorate the women in World War 1 who served doughnuts to the soldiers. Today, several stores run specials and even give out free donuts in celebration of this holiday.
June 20 – Ugliest Dog Day
You would be hard-pressed to find an individual who doesn’t interact with a dog on a regular basis. Whether you own a dog, live next door to one, or have family and friends with a 4-legged companion, it is safe to say canines are part of everyday life for many. Ugliest Dog Day is a celebration of some of the more “looks-challenged” pups that began a few years ago with a fun contest and grew into a celebratory day! In 2009, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest was trademarked and is held each June at the Sonoma-Marin Fair. The holiday has grown each year and allows dog-lovers all over to celebrate their pooches no matter how they look! If you don’t want the dog celebrations to end, keep the party going by celebrating Take Your Dog To Work Day on June 22!
June 21 – World Giraffe Day
The Giraffe Conservation Foundation has dedicated June 21 as World Giraffe Day. This date was chosen because this day has either the longest day or night (depending on location) and the giraffe has the longest neck of any animal. The day was created to raise support and awareness for giraffes in the wild. There are only 100,000 giraffes left in the wild so this day is particularly helpful in educating the public regarding the dangers that the species faces.
June 27 – National Pineapple Day
Summer has officially arrived and now it is time to celebrate a traditional and delicious summer fruit, the pineapple! There is no better time to celebrate this tropical fruit than summertime so grab your pineapple print clothing and prepare yourself a refreshing pineapple cocktail or cook up some pineapple on the grill! Pineapples offer nutritional value because they have dietary fiber and an enzyme called bromelain which helps boost the immune system.
June 29 – Waffle Iron Day
For all of those breakfast lovers out there, this is a holiday you will not want to miss! Waffle irons use began long ago in the 14th century when people would cook their waffles over an open fire and create designs on them such as religious symbols or coats of arms. The first waffle iron patent in the United States was in 1869, the first prototype was produced by General Electric in 1911, and the first waffle iron to be available for public sale was in 1918. So, if you are a waffle-lover, you will want to break out your waffle iron for this fun holiday and show off some of your fancy creations!
There, of course, are some of the traditional holidays that occur in June such as Father’s Day on June 17, and the Summer Solstice also known as the first day of Summer on June 21. You will want to make sure you mark those dates on your calendar. If you aren’t a fan of any of the quirky holidays we have listed here, don’t worry! There are plenty of other holidays you can enjoy each day of the month!
