There are many perks to living in an apartment as well as owning a dog. Just because you have one doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t have the other! Once you have confirmed that your lease allows pets and what the restrictions are then you can move forward with finding a companion best suited for you and your living arrangements! You might be surprised to learn that some dogs are perfect pets for apartment living!

There are several things to consider when choosing the right dog. For apartment dwellers, the size of your pet is not the only thing to keep in mind. While some residences have restrictions on size and weight of an animal that is allowed to live there, the owner will want to consider the energy level temperament of the dog as well. Some of the breeds are well-suited for apartment living because they do not require a heavy amount of exercise and are generally easy going around people.

Bichon Frise

A Bichon Frise is a small white fluffy dog that grows to about a foot in height and not quite up to 20 pounds in weight. This breed is known to be friendly and playful and gets along well with children. They do not need a lot of exercise, so if you walk your dog daily and play with them regularly, they should be content. Due to their size, Bichon’s are considered ideal city dogs, according to the American Kennel Club. Plus their adorable little faces and velvety, hypoallergenic coats are practically irresistible! Some smaller dogs tend to bark a lot and at a high pitch. Thankfully, most Bichons tend to bark less than most smaller dogs do, which will keep your neighbors happy!

The bulldog breed is categorized in the non-sporting group and has a calm and friendly personality. Their docile and somewhat lazy temperament makes them the perfect apartment dwelling dogs. They have a fairly low tolerance for exercise so if you don’t lead a very active lifestyle, this could be the breed for you. Exercise is still important to keep your dog healthy so a daily walk should be sufficient for this pooch.  A male bulldog usually gets to a maximum weight of about 50 pounds and a female bulldog to a weight of about 40 pounds which usually falls into a range allowed in most apartments. Bulldogs tend to be pretty quiet dogs except when it comes to their sleeping. Bulldogs tend to be snorers! If you can get past their nighttime noises, this dog may be the perfect companion for you.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Another small to medium sized dog that could be your perfect apartment companion is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The breed is very gentle yet also a little sporty! The breed has moderate energy levels so daily walks and play sessions are important. This time together will also strengthen your bond which tends to be very close with this breed. The breed will also be loved by neighbors for its upbeat and calm personality, and the fact that they never lose their puppy face! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are categorized into the toy group and only grow to be about a foot tall and  13 -18 lbs.

If you still don’t think that these breeds are the right canine companions for you, don’t worry! There are many other breeds that fit all types of lifestyles and homes. Always be sure to confirm the type and size of dog allowed in your apartment so that you don’t run into problems later on down the road. If you don’t think a dog is a right fit for you but are still looking for a companion, there are several other animals that might suit you better that are apartment friendly.
